Welcome to Fall!

Hello, fall! This season brings its own unique charm, no matter where you are. One thing that we all experience this time of year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) is the gradual shift from long stretches of daylight to evenings with more darkness.

This transition, along with the holidays of the fall, inspires a variety of events and traditions that make this time of year special. The Creative Fold team embraces the season with these favorite fall activities:

"Fall is my favorite season. I love the smell of the season changing and going for walks when the leaves are colorful and starting to fall. Where we live in Virginia, the temperature outside falls back to reasonable levels, it’s not too rainy, and it's wonderful to be outside. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love the ritual of getting out the Halloween trunk with costumes, makeup, decorations and fall-themed books. My husband's family has a Halloween recipe called Bat Stew that we bake in a pumpkin and eat on Halloween night after trick-or-treating. My son Harrison's birthday is November 26, so that adds to the fun of the season for us.” – Katie

“Every fall, right around the end of September or early October, I build our family Sukkah. It's a tradition we've kept alive for over 14 years. In the Jewish faith, we build a Sukkah, or “hut,” to celebrate Sukkot – a weeklong holiday that celebrates the harvest and remembers the temporary shelters the Jewish people built after escaping Egypt (a long, long time ago!). While some families sleep in their Sukkah, we prefer the comfort of our home. But when the weather permits, we make sure to have all our meals in the Sukkah, often inviting many friends and family to join us. For years, I’ve added to this tradition by making time-lapse videos of the family building the Sukkah and posting them online. Now, family and friends wait in anticipation to see the latest "Building of the Sukkah" video. (Visit https://bit.ly/3ZoaSgj to see last year’s video.) It's a tradition that means a lot to my family. Sitting in the Sukkah brings us closer to our roots and gives us a break from the day-to-day grind.” – Edoardo

“As a child, I loved watching monarch butterflies flutter from flower to flower. Sadly, the monarch butterfly is now on the endangered species list, so three years ago, I planted milkweed (the only plant monarch caterpillars eat) in my yard. I spend early fall watching over the milkweed, caterpillars and chrysalises. Each year, I place a few caterpillars inside a safe net enclosure and when they are ready, I release them. These early autumn butterflies will make the long and amazing migration to Mexico.” – Kristin

“My favorite fall tradition is Halloween camping! Every year we take a trip to a favorite Virginia campground for some spooky outdoor fun. We started this tradition when my oldest son was just 4 months old and haven't missed a year, so this Halloween will be our 15th Halloween camping trip. We spend the weekend cooking yummy fall foods, decorating our camper and campsite, trick-or-treating, going on haunted hayrides and making bonfires. Our favorite part is the costume contest! We’ve won first place over the years for costumes like Chucky, a headless scientist and Hannibal Lecter. I have so many amazing memories of our camping trips over the years. It's a tradition I hope to carry on with my grandkids one day.” – Chrisy

Whether you like to pick apples, go on hayrides, carve pumpkins, play board games inside – or enjoy other traditions this time of year, we hope you have a fantastic fall season!
